1 (A) Devanaṁpriyo Priyaśi raja savatra ichati savra-
2 [p]raṣamda vaseyu (B) save hi te sayame bhava-śudhi ca ichaṁti
3 (C) jano cu ucavuca-chaṁdo ucavuca-rago (D) te savraṁ va eka-deśaṁ va
4 pi kaṣamti (E) vipule pi cu dane yasa nasti sayama bhava-
5 śudhi kitrañata dridha-bhatita nice padhaṁ

Translation

(A) King Devānaṁpriya Priyadarśin desires (that) all sects may reside every- where.
(B) For all these desire self-control and purity of mind.
(C) But men possess various desires (and) various passions.
(D) They will fulfil either the whole or only a portion (of their duties).
(E) But even one who (practises) great liberality, (but) does not possess self- control, purity of mind, gratitude, (and) firm devotion, is very mean.
